Comparing VPN Protocols: SSTP vs PPTP

Of the hundreds of VPN services you’ll find out there, each one offering you security for your data and the ability to access websites that are ordinarily unavailable to you, one of the most obvious differences between the packages they’ll be advertising is the security protocols they use. Two of the most common are SSTP and PPTP. Nice acronyms, but what do they mean and which one works best?

PPTP VPN Protocol: Point-to-Point Tunneling

PPTP is probably the most common VPN protocol on offer, used by most providers and suitable for all devices, both PC and peripheral. It’s not thought to be the most secure protocol out there, but it’s certainly secure enough for most day-to-day VPN usages. It’s also the most broadly compatible, working with almost any operating system, including Windows, Mac OS, iPhone and Android, and supported by most devices, including tablets and mobile phones.

PPTP is fast and easier to set up than alternative VPN protocols, but it has been criticized in the past for security defects. It’s capable of bypassing internet restrictions, but is perhaps not so reliable or secure as SSTP.

SSTP VPN Protocol: Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol

SSTP, on the other hand, is widely believed to the most secure VPN protocol available, using 2048 bit certificates to keep your data ultra safe. It’s generally the protocol of choice for businesses that keep the personal data of employees or customers on their system. SSTP will probably slow up your transfer a little, but it offers stronger encryption and still works in network environments where other VPN protocols have been blocked, because it uses TCP port 443, which enables users to pass through almost any firewall or proxy.

SSTP VPN protocol is more secure and stable than other VPN protocols but doesn’t work with some operating systems. You can use it with Linux, Mac OC, Windows and BSD, but you might want to investigate further if you’re using a different OS.

SSTP vs PPTP: Which Protocol Do I Want To Choose?

Whether you choose a VPN that uses PPTP, SSTP or both – or one that offers other protocols such as L2TP and OpenVPN as well – depends on how much you want to spend and how sensitive your internet browsing and the data you will be sending is.

In general, if you’re looking for the most secure and stable VPN service available, you’ll probably want to choose one that offers SSTP. If you’re more interested in speed, value for money and ease of use and the data you’re sending isn’t sensitive enough to sink nations, you will have few problems using a PPTP VPN protocol.
