Tutorial for the Configuration of L2TP/IPSEC Setup on Windows 8

The process for the setup of L2TP/IPSEC VPN access is very simple for Windows 8 platform. This connection can also be established by using various client softwares that most of the VPN service providers provide along with their services making it easier to establish a connection. However, to establish a connection on your own, the instructions for the setup of creating a connection with L2TP/IPSEC address are given in an informative stepwise format as below.

  1. To start with, begin the process by pressing the Windows key, then type there ‘Virtual Private Network’ and then click on Settings Category. From there, select the option to set up a new VPN (Virtual Private Network).
  2. In the next step, enter the VPN server address in the field for Internet Address. The address for the server will be provided to you by the service provider from whom you got the VPN service.
  3. In the field named Destination Name, type in the description for the VPN that you are going to use. This is just for the purpose of identification of the connection made by you and it can be anything of your choice.
  4. After entering the above details, you need to click on the create button that will take you to the network pane. In this pane, you will be able to see the name of the VPN connection that you just created on which you need to click with the right button of your mouse. You will get a drop down menu, from which you have to select the Properties option.
  5. In the properties box, go to the security tab and select ‘L2TP/IPSEC’ option as the category of VPN type. Then you need to click on ‘Allow these Protocols’ and then select the value ‘Microsoft CHAP Version 2’.
  6. After this step, click on the advanced settings option and here you need to enter the pre-shared key that your VPN service has provided you when you subscribed to their service. Click on OK after completing this step.
  7. The setup is almost complete. Now you need to click on the monitor icon provided on the right hand side of the bottom of the screen.
  8. Look for the connection that you just created and then click on the connect option to connect to the network.
  9. Type in the username and the password for the VPN connection as and when prompted to proceed with the connection and wait for the appearance of the Connected sign.
  10. After establishing the connection, you can check for the IP of your system as displayed on the server from various IP checking websites available.

Tips for Future Reference

  • In case you need to access the Network Pane in the future, just click on the Network icon as appearing in the system tray. You can also access the same by going to the charms bar and then selecting Settings followed by the selection of the Network option.
  • To toggle the connection with the service ON/OFF, select the desired network in the Network Pane and then connect/disconnect the connection by using the desired buttons.
  • If you want to remove a VPN connection that you have saved previously, select the ‘View Network Connection’ after pressing the windows key. Then go to the settings category and then click on the ‘View Network Connections’ option. Look for the connection that you want to remove, click on the name with the right button of the mouse and then select the delete option from the drop down menu to delete the connection.
