Tutorial for Setup and Configuration of PPTP VPN Connection in Mac OS 10.5

  1. To be able to connect to the VPN network with PPTP protocol availability, you need to manually configure the PPTP network connection. For creating a connection, you need to gain access to the network manager for the Mac OS 10.5 platform.
  2. To get to the network manager, click on the option for System Preferences and then look for the network icon and click on it. A new window will open up displaying the network manager to help you manage your network settings.
  3. In the network window, you will see a list of network connections on the left hand side. This list contains all those connections that are either created by you or are available to connect. But we are not interested in this list, as we have to create a new connection.
  4. To create a new connection, you need to click on the plus (+) button provided at the bottom of the list. This will open up a new window to begin with the creation of a new network.
  5. Here you need to enter the interface type and the service name. Select the VPN as the interface type from the drop down list available for the selection.
  6. After the selection of the VPN option as the interface type, a new field asking for the type of the VPN will appear. Select PPTP from the list of available VPN types for this new field.
  7. The next field is for the name of the service that you are going to use with this new connection. This name can be any according to your choice, which you will use for identification of the connection later on.
  8. After filling in all the details, click on the create button to create the network and proceed to its configuration.
  9. After the network is created, you will be able to see the name on the list of network connections available. Click on the network that you just created to get a window for entering the configuration details.
  10. You need to enter the server address for the configuration to be completed, which your service provider will provide you, either in the welcome mail or through any other communication.
  11. After filling in the server address, you need to click on the button for authentication settings. Here you will see a field for password. Enter the connection password and then click on OK.

So, you are finished with the set up and configuration of the PPTP server on your Mac OS 10.5. You can now connect to the network and enjoy anonymous access to restricted sites.
