Guide to Connect to a PPTP VPN Connection through HP WebOS based Devices

WebOS, previously a mobile OS, is a Linux based operating system launched by HP for smart TVs and other devices. WebOS 3.0.2 or higher supports PPTP VPN, for which, guide to set up a suitable connection is given below.

  • To start with the setup of a PPTP VPN connection with the HP WebOS system, you need to access the VPN settings for the device. For this, you need to start with the home screen and tap on the arrow icon provided at the bottom of the screen.
  • This will open up a small menu, where you need to find the ‘settings’ icon and tap on it to get access to the settings of the operating system. On the ‘settings’ menu, you need to look for the ‘VPN’ menu and then tap on it to open the ‘VPN’ menu to proceed with the setup.
  • The ‘VPN’ menu provides you a list of all the VPN connections available for your device along with an option to add a new connection of your own.
  • Tap on the ‘Add Profile’ link to add a new VPN connection to the device. This will prompt you for the type of connection that you want to connect to. Choose ‘PPTP’ from the drop down list and then click on the ‘next’ button at the bottom of the screen to proceed with the configuration of the new connection on your device.
  • You will get a configuration form with a number of fields, where you need to fill in the desired values of your VPN connection.
  •  In the first field labeled ‘Profile name’, which must be filled with a name for the connection according to your convenience. You should choose a name that will make it easier for you to find the connection later on.
  • In the next field labeled ‘VPN Server’, you need to enter the value of the IP address of the server that you want to connect through this connection. You will find the desired value for this field in the welcome mail from your VPN provider.
  • Next fields are labeled as ‘Login Credentials’, where you must input the values for ‘username’ and ‘password’ for your VPN service. The welcome mail contains values for these fields as well.
  • In the next group labeled as ‘Authentication methods’, you should check the options ‘CHAP’, ‘MSCHAP’ and ‘MSCHAPv2’ to enable them for the connection.
  • Under the ‘Tunnel options’ group, set the option named ‘Point-to-point encryption (MPPE)’ to ‘All Available’ and then enable the option ‘Tunnel all traffic’.
  • With this step, the configuration part of the connection is complete, after which, you are ready to connect to the VPN connection. Recheck all the values entered before proceeding with the connection.
  • Tap on the ‘connect’ button to save and hence, establish a connection with the desired VPN server.
