Need for VPN

VPN servers are being utilized by users mainly for two reasons, one is for security and anonymity and the other is to obtain access to all the websites. Online security is a key priority for all the businesses, employees and travelers since one does not want to lose their business data, files and even cash possessed by them. Earlier, VPN was mainly offered for Windows users and due to the advancement of latest technologies, popularity and demand amongst people, usage of Mac started to increase and now, VPN servers are accessed by Mac users too and the numbers are staggeringly increasing. That brings us here to understand the basic setup procedure for VPN on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The VPN setup procedure for 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard are one and the same. Users who are not able to find the VPN setup process for their 10.5 Leopard software can go through this article too.

Step: 1

Network control panel tool should be opened. This can be done by either directly clicking on the Apple icon or going for the search or can even be accessed from System Preferences, where Network menu would appear and it should be clicked.

Step: 2

Second and most important step is to add the VPN connection onto the system. A list of the connections that are already available in the Network setup would be displayed on the page and below the list, there would be two options, one to add a new connection, which can be done by clicking ‘+’ and the other is to remove a connection from the system and it can be performed by clicking ‘-‘. Click ‘+’ to start the procedure.

Step 3:

A pop-up menu would appear which would ask for details such as Interface, VPN type and Service Name. Interface slot should be selected to be VPN. VPN Type would indicate the type of VPN protocol using which the user would be able to connect to the VPN service i.e. it can be PPTP, SSTP, and IPSec etc. Service name would differ based on the type of VPN protocol. For example, for SSTP type, the Service name would be VPN (SSTP). After entering all the corresponding values, the user should click on ‘Create’, which would result in a new connection being created.

Step 4:

VPN setup authentication would be the next stage in the VPN setup process. Configuration details such as Configuration, server address, account name and encryption details would have to be filled in. All these details would be provided by the VPN service provider. Encryption bit would differ across VPN providers and it should be set as Automatic, in order to be on the safer side. Any changes to the bit encryption from the provider’s end would also be updated automatically in the case of automatic setup.

Step 5:

To authenticate the configuration setup of the VPN, the user should select ‘Authentication Settings’ page. This would lead them to a page which would ask for password. After entering the password, click ‘OK’.

Step 6:

This would be the penultimate step and the user should make sure that all the details entered in the setup page are perfect and are devoid of any errors. After making sure that, all the details are correct, click ‘Apply’.

Step 7:

After that, click on ‘Advanced’ menu. In the advanced settings page, make sure that feature “Send all traffic over VPN connection” is selected. This is the key to the VPN connection. After selecting it, click ‘OK’. After all this, click Apply button once more.

Step 8:

The VPN is setup by now and the connection can be established or disconnected from the list of Network connections which would display this particular network as well. While clicking on ‘Connect’, the user can make sure that the option to ‘Show VPN status in menu bar’ is selected. This would be better because, every time the user need not look into the Network page to find out the status of the VPN connection. VPN connection can be easily connected or disconnected from the Menu bar.
