How to setup PPTP connection on Mac OS X 10.2

Step 1: Find the Internet Connect

Go to the application folder of the system drive and open the ‘Internet connect’. This is the place where almost all of your INTERNET connection settings can be changed.

Step 2: Once you are here, choose ‘VPN’. Then you would be asked which sort of VPN connection you want to setup. There’s L2TP over IPSec and PPTP. Since, here our interests lie in learning about PPTP, we shall talk only about this sort of VPN. So, click on the PPTP radio button, and then click ‘continue’.

Step 3: Enter the details of your VPN service

You would be taken to a dialogue box where you are supposed to enter the details regarding your VPN service. Enter the server address which is usually found in an email sent by your VPN service provider. Then enter, the Account Name. This is actually your username. And then enter the password.

Step 4: Change the configurations

In the Configuration option, choose ‘edit configurations’. Before the configuration window opens, you would be asked if you want to save the connection which you just created. Give a name to the connection and press, ‘Save’.

In the configurations window, enter the details like server address, username and password. Keep encryption in the automatic mode. Once you are done, click ‘Ok’. And you are done!

To connect to your VPN service, all you have to do is click ‘connect’ for the recently saved connection.

Thus, following these few simple steps you can setup the PPTP protocol for Mac OS X 10.2. Using a VPN service has many advantages. Apart from the extra layer of security that you find, there are some other perks to be exploited too. There are services like Hulu.com, Netflix etc, which are available only to the citizens of the US. If you are outside US and want to use any of these services, you can use your VPN service. The VPN servers which are located in the US, will connect to desired service and hence it would be like you are in one of the 50 states of US.
